The main TV season is over for the year, and the summer season has begun. Let’s talk about what’s gone, and what’s coming up!
First off, I have to mourn the loss of our dearly departed Reaper. Maybe it wasn’t a truly amazing show, but it always gave us some giggles, and the series finale had a couple huge laughs. The writers did a nice job in season 2 keeping the storyline moving along, and introducing Nina the demon as a girlfriend for Ben was genius. Clearly the finale wasn’t meant to be a real end for the series, but it will have to do. I guess I’m back to just 1 show to watch on the CW anymore!

Currently it’s still a good time for TV. We’ve been blessed with the final episodes of Pushing Daisies, which is being prematurely canceled. At least we have a few more moments to savor. If the upcoming episodes feature Olive singing additional songs by Lionel Ritchie, I say – heaven!
Also we have been sucked into So You Think You Can Dance. It’s a show that my friends have been imploring me to watch for years, but I think I was too gun-shy from American Idol. Fortunately SYTYCD is vastly superior, and really features some top-notch talent. The judges offer substantive feedback to the dancers, and some people are put through to the next round even if they aren’t totally photogenic. Imagine that, Idol producers! Right now I have my eye on the two blond sisters that auditioned in separate cities. They were showing modern dance at its best. Also I’m fond of this redhead (Natalie) – she’s utterly charming. So bring on the tamale train!
Finally, you should pencil something into your August calendar now – it’s the return of Project Runway! According to the folks at Entertainment Weekly the show isn’t going to change much at all now that it’s on Lifetime, other than the current season taking place in Los Angeles. I can hardly wait! Bring on the withering stares from Nina Garcia!
So that’s my story – now it’s time to tell me yours. What shows are you sad to see cancelled this year? Or are there any that you breathed a sigh of relief when you heard they were renewed? And what will you be watching during this long hot summer?
I’m going to miss the Pie Maker and Sam the Soul Catcher. They were fun friends.
Otherwise, I look forward to not having to many TV commitments this summer.
I’m also very sad about the loss of Pushing Daisies.
We had excellent Season Finales on some of our favorites: Castle*, Supernatural and LOST. The first two were dramatic fade to blacks and LOST went fade to white.
*Castle is our favorite new show, by far. We’re into the (police/medical) procedural genre anyways, but this is a great take on it.
I’m mildly amused that Dollhouse was renewed.
For the summer, I’ve committed to Harper’s Island – already banished to Saturday evening, although as a Tivo viewer, that’s a bit irrelevant. It’s mindless and has become “have on the TV while I play computer games” viewing. I was interested in the “Maxi-series” format, and it has one of my favorite character actors in it: Jim Beaver (Deadwood, Supernatural)
I also thought I’d be more interested in the long awaited return of Rescue Me, but it’s just not grabbing me. It used to be “watch that night as soon as the wife and kids are asleep” viewing to “Maybe I’ll get to it before the next episode airs.” They do a five minute recap “show” that airs Saturday nights that gets grabbed as part of the season pass, and I’ve used it twice…
So happy True Blood comes back this month. After that season ends I’ll probably cancel my HBO. It’s the only reason I still have it.
“Mad Men” comes back soon – I started watching this on my IPOD while commuting and am eagerly awaiting to see what happens to Don Draper and the rest of the characters.
I watched a free episode of “Nurse Jackie” on my IPOD recently. Love Edie Falco, but the gross-out factor was too much for me. It is dark and I just don’t feel like spending my summer time in that ‘place’ (she’s a pill popping nurse – think Six Feet Under meets a hospital show).
Against my will I’m watching “The Fashion Show”. At the end of the season I’ll say Buh-Bye Darling – it’s not my favorite but I’m in it now. I’m having mixed feelings about “Project Runway” going to LA… and kinda loving “Real Housewives of NJ” – what can I do – its like required watching in this state.
Pushing Daisies is too quirky for television – anything good on prime time gets canceled. Case in point, Arrested Development.
