This week’s review in Entertainment Weekly reminded me just how much I’ve been enjoying The Big Bang Theory of late.
Here’s the thing – the show premiered last season and it was a little odd, but too much of something we’d seen before. Some socially awkward characters, one guy lusting for the girl he’ll never get, etc. After the first couple episodes I figured I’d stop watching. Of course, we kept seeing it, mostly because it ran right next to mainstay How I Met Your Mother.
And as the season progressed, the writers figured out what was working and what wasn’t, and for once they really altered the course of a show! The unrequited love thing was minimized. The geek factor was increased but in a way that many of us not-so-geeky can relate to. And most importantly of all, the dichotomy of Sheldon’s superior attitude was balanced against Penny’s everywoman personality. The fights between the two became legendary!
Now in its second season the show has really hit its stride and delivers big laughs every week. We’re now blessed with a full HOUR of great comedy on Mondays! Proof that the sitcom is not dead.
